Shoulder Arthroscopy / MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERIES of shoulder

SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPY:

‘ARTHRO’ means joint and ‘SCOPE’ means to look inside the joint. In this keyhole surgery, a few pencil sized incisions are made which facilitate a tiny camera to view the joint and instruments to repair any damaged tissues inside it.

REASONS FOR ARTHROSCOPY:

Out of many traumatic injuries, some conditions that usually require keyhole surgery are:

Torn tissues, Frozen shoulder, Abnormal formations, Arthritis, Dislocated shoulder, Loose bodies, Impingement, Synovitis / Bursitis, Calcium deposits on the tendon orAny combination of the above conditions

PREPARATION FOR THE SURGERY:

After diagnosing and concluding that Arthroscopic surgery is the best treatment option, the preparation for the surgery begins.

Shoulder Arthroscopy / MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERIES of shoulder

Shoulder pain and stiffness is most common presenting complaint of our patients in outpatient department. Here it is essential to understand, that Shoulder is the most mobile but unstable joint and therefore gets injured very quickly. Mostly it can be treated with medicine and physiotherapy but there are many who do not respond well to it. Patients, who do not respond to these non operative methods, require surgery. Most of the times, we perform a keyhole surgery, medically known as Shoulder Arthroscopy, to provide relief to the patient.

PRIOR TO THE SURGERY:

The patient is checked for fevers, cold, coughs and skin condition around the shoulder. All the test reports like EKG, chest X-ray or any other required test, to assess if all the reports are clear. Information regarding the surgery, anesthesia and other details are clearly discussed with the patient.

DURING THE SURGERY:

The patient is prepared for the surgery by giving anesthesiathat makes the patient fall asleep. A few small pen sized incisions (cuts)are made on the skin around the shoulder and a tiny telescope with camera called Arthroscopeis inserted to see inside the joint. The damaged tissues or tendons are repaired easily and within very small time, the surgery is performed.

Two most common indications for shoulder arthroscopy are recurrent dislocation shoulder and rotator cuff tears. Former is more often seen in young population while latter is more common in elderly population.

Recurrent dislocation shoulder is a condition when shoulder dislocates repeatedly most common cause for this is bankart’s lesion in which labrum and ligament gets torn leading to instability. Here we suture back labrum and ligaments arthroscopically using special technique and instruments.

After the surgerythe minimal cuts are covered by adhesive tape or stitched and the shoulder is bandaged. The shoulder is thereafter put in a sling to immobilize it so that no pressure is felt by the shoulder.

POST SURGERY REHABILITATION:

We keep our first rehabilitation session usually after one to three days of the surgery where we explain to the patient the exercises to be done regularly to help in bringing back motion to the shoulder and the prescriptions that they will have to follow to regularly.

RECOVERY AFTER SURGERY

Depending on the complexity of the case and rehabilitation protocols are followed. Complications in Arthroscopy are rare and minimal. Recovery following arthroscopic surgery is faster than open surgery.

Reduced post operative pain and scarring brought about by improved instrumentation and technologically advanced methods have been our prima focus and moving a step ahead with it,we introduce yet another minimally invasive surgery for shoulder debilitation i.e. Arthroscopic Surgery.

It not only ensures patients less pain in comparison to a open surgery. No visible scars, faster recovery and lesser complications are benefits associated with Arthroscopic surgery.

We take extreme pride to introduce this technique and its effective deliverance by our highly efficient and one of the best in the field of Shoulder and hand, Dr. Vikas Gupta.
